Tall, slender and quietly architectural, bamboo takes on a softer character when grown in kokedama (苔玉) — the Japanese art of growing plants within a moss-covered ball of soil.
The swaying stem contrast beautifully against the rounded moss base, creating a simple composition of height, texture and balance. As the bamboo grows, its gentle movement brings a little feeling of the outdoors into the home.
Pet Safety 🐾
Bamboo species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs
Fun Fact!
This bamboo variety symbolizes resilience and harmony in Feng Shui, often kept near entryways for prosperity.
Care Notes
Sunlight ☀️
Bright, indirect light with gentle morning sun. Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun, which can dry the moss ball quickly.
Water 💧Rather than watering from the top, soak the entire moss ball in a bowl of water for around 5–10 minutes, then allow excess water to drain completely before returning it to its display.
Water again when the moss ball feels noticeably lighter and the outer moss begins to feel dry. In Singapore, check it every few days as kokedama can dry faster than conventional pots.
Humidity 🌬️
Enjoys moderate to high humidity and good airflow. Lightly misting the moss can help keep its surface fresh, but misting does not replace a proper soak.
Tip 💬
Pick up your kokedama to learn its weight — a freshly watered moss ball feels noticeably heavier than one that needs watering. This is often more reliable than following a fixed watering schedule.
Size
Size varies according to plant. Approx. 50-60 cm tall
Pot diameter: 15cm, Pot height: 6cm
